  • Foil Insulation Suspended from Program

    Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, suspended the use of foil insulation nation-wide under the Home Insulation Program, effective today.

    “Today we have taken swift action to suspend foil insulation from use under the Home Insulation Program," Mr Garrett said.

    The Federal Government is to introduce safety guidelines and cut the rebate for its $3.9 billion home insulation scheme.

    There have been allegations of widespread rorting of the scheme and claims that shoddy work practices have caused house fires.

    The Federal Opposition says poor training has led to injuries and one death, and a Senate inquiry will examine the scheme's operation.

    As the state with the lowest level of insulation and the most energy inefficient housing in the country, Queensland stands to reap substantial gains from the Federal Government's Energy Efficient Homes program, according to the Insulation Council of Australia and New Zealand (ICANZ).

    Mr D'Arcy, ICANZ CEO, said, "At only 42 per cent, Queensland has the lowest level of insulation in Australia (ABS 2005).

    The clean energy headline in last night's federal budget was a new $1.35 billion Solar Flagships program that will drive up to four large scale solar power stations.
